Current and Planned Giving to the United Way Endowment

A permanent investment in the quality of our community

The United Way of Greater Lima Endowment

The United Way of Greater Lima thanks all donors who have made current and planned gifts to the Endowment Fund. Endowment income now supports innovative projects at United Way agencies. When the Endowment's "Legacy Fund" is large enough, income from this special fund will pay the costs of annual United Way campaigns and year-round operations. Then 100% of all ¬ campaign contributions will provide health and social services in the greater Lima community.

The United Way Endowment began in 1991 with a gift of $100,000 in memory of John L. Crouse and an anonymous $150,000 challenge grant. Thanks to more than 100 donors since then, the Endowment has grown to more than $1.2 million.

All contributors to the Endowment - current or planned gifts - are members of The 1918 Society. Created in 1998, the Society gets its name from the first Allen County combined charitable campaign - the War Chest of 1918. Mrs. Virginia Crouse serves as Honorary Volunteer Chair of the Society.

In May 2003 the United Way launched a public campaign to increase the Endowment's Legacy Fund to $5 million. Income from the Legacy Fund will underwrite the cost of United Way annual campaigns and year-round operations. Currently, the Legacy Fund has more than $400,000. John White is the volunteer Chair of the Legacy Fund Endowment Campaign.

To help with this campaign, the United Way has partnered with the Lima Community Foundation. Foundation staff will assist donors in finding methods of supporting the United Way Endowment appropriate to their circumstances.

In October 2003 the United Way of Greater Lima was nationally recognized as a winner of the Lasting Legacy Award. The United Way of America presents these awards annually for outstanding best practices and results in planned giving.

Giving to the United Way Endowment with current and planned gifts

Current gifts to the United Way of Greater Lima Endowment may be made in a variety of ways. Cash gifts are the simplest gift to make. Donors may also make gifts of appreciated assets - stocks and bonds, for example - and life insurance policies.

Memorial gifts in the name of loved ones or gifts in honor of special occasions - weddings or anniversaries - are other ways to make current gifts to the United Way Endowment.

Planned gifts to the Endowment come in many forms. The simplest planned gift is a bequest through your will or trust. Other planned gifts offer a life income to the donors.

In 2000 Dick and Joyce Meredith established a gift annuity to benefit the UWGL Endowment. The Merediths were first in the nation to use United Way of America's Charitable Gift Annuity Program.

A charitable gift annuity takes a gift that might normally be a bequest in your will, removes it from your estate now, and provides you with income for life and some tax advantages. The Meredith's gave stock that was producing little more than 2% income and increased its income to 6.6%. With capital gains and charitable deduction benefits, the effective rate is about 7.8%.
