What is a QCD? (Qualified Charitable Distribution)

If you are 70 ½ and have an IRA, there’s a smart way to help our community reach new heights by supporting United Way of Greater Lima! Making a gift from your IRA, known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), is a tax-free way to give to the causes you care about, even if you don’t itemize deductions on your tax return. If you have a traditional IRA, you must take a distribution out of your IRA called a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). The start of each new year (except for 2020 because of the CARES Act) means you have a new RMD. This is a great way to give to The United Way of Greater Lima TAX FREE!
RMDs are the biggest incentive for IRA holders to make QCDs because:
1) It will lower your taxable income if you do not need the IRA funds
2) You will avoid a 50% tax penalty for not taking your RMD
3) The money comes from pre-tax dollars
4) It will reduce future income tax
5) It will reduce future RMDs
6) You can deduct up to $300 above the standard deduction for individuals (or up to $600 if filing jointly) in charitable contributions. This is for everyone, even if you have no other itemizations
