Do you need to update or write your will?
Are you 70 ½ and want to learn how to donate to the United Way tax-free?
The United Way of Greater Lima wants to help you take care of an important task yet this year (2020) and in the New Year 2021. We’ve recently partnered with FreeWill to give all our supporters the opportunity to write a legally valid will for free – in less than 25 minutes. And, if you feel moved, we’d be honored if you choose to create a legacy by including a gift to The United Way of Greater Lima.
Take care of this year’s resolution and/or, get started early on your 2021 Resolutions by writing or updating your will today. There is no personal information that is asked on this free service, but the printed version is a legal document.
What is a QCD? (Qualified Charitable Distribution)
If you are 70 ½ and have an IRA, there’s a smart way to help our community reach new heights by supporting United Way of Greater Lima! Making a gift from your IRA, known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), is a tax-free way to give to the causes you care about, even if you don’t itemize deductions on your tax return. If you have a traditional IRA, you must take a distribution out of your IRA called a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). The start of each new year (except for 2020 because of the CARES Act) means you have a new RMD. This is a great way to give to The United Way of Greater Lima TAX FREE!
RMDs are the biggest incentive for IRA holders to make QCDs because:
1) It will lower your taxable income if you do not need the IRA funds
2) You will avoid a 50% tax penalty for not taking your RMD
3) The money comes from pre-tax dollars
4) It will reduce future income tax
5) It will reduce future RMDs
6) You can deduct up to $300 above the standard deduction for individuals (or up to $600 if filing jointly) in charitable contributions. This is for everyone, even if you have no other itemizations
